It took less than an hour for Siena to write up her report. Back in her apartment, she hit SEND and leaned back in her chair. She stretched her arms up overhead and rubbed her eyes briefly before pushing up to her feet.

She wouldn’t hear anything back until Monday, but Siena had every expectation that this particular case would be closed. The Andalusias were going to be disappointed, but the likelihood that Helene had somehow managed to forge all the transfer documents and appropriate signatures was just too small. All of the evidence indicated that Josh had, indeed, given her the painting before his death. Therefore, it wasn’t part of the estate, and of no further concern to Hunter & Glass.

Still, something about the whole thing bothered her. Siena ran her fingers through her hair, and then fluffed it in frustration as she strode from her office to the kitchen. With quick, sharp movements, she grabbed her kettle and filled it, then set about making some tea in the hopes that it would help distract her ever-racing, circling mind.

For some reason, she couldn’t get the image of Helene’s art collection out of her mind. There really wasn’t any coherence to it, which lent credence to her story of them mostly being gifts…but how many creative ex-lovers did Helene have? And why was she so casual about their art? It was Siena’s business to know high-value pieces when she saw them, and Inspiration hadn’t been Helene’s only masterwork on display.

The tea kettle shrieked, bringing Siena out of her musings long enough to turn off the burner and finish making her tea. With a sigh of defeat, she took the steaming cup and went back into her office to fire up her computer again. If she knew nothing else, Siena knew that she wouldn’t be able to rest until she answered at least some of her curiosity.

Unfortunately for her, after about an hour of internet research, she still had more questions than answers. Helene Spitha was a well enough known personality that she appeared on several gossip and society blogs with regularity. And yes, she did seem to have a decided preference for creative types. Siena scrolled back past the articles and photos linking her with Catalan. Before him, she’d apparently been spending time with a young filmmaker who died in a tragic car accident. There was a touching picture of Helene hugging the young man’s mother at his funeral.

Siena pursed her lips and kept scrolling. Before the filmmaker, there was a torrid relationship with a breakout rapper who hadn’t been fully divorced by the time they started dating. It hadn’t stopped his album from topping the charts, however, which made it all the more tragic when he died of a fentanyl overdose a few months later. Before him…

Siena blinked, and sat back hard in her chair as another picture loaded fully. Recognition shot through her as she looked at the picture of a smiling man with his arm around Helene Spitha and a glass of champagne in his hand.
